Work of Art: Fan-Made Custom Sonic Spinball Pinball Machine #Shorts
389In this YouTube shorts episode, we share a video of a fan-made work of art, a custom Sonic Spinball pinball machine, as seen at the 2021 Pinball expo.
I was very lucky to be invited to be a panelist at the 2021 Pinball Expo in Schaumburg, Illinois. While the focus of this channel is retro on modern video gaming, I've always enjoyed playing pinball games, So for me, this was super cool to be a part of. There were many different pinball machines on site that we had to play, including some custom and homemade units. One of them that blew me away was what you see here, a custom, home-built love letter to Sonic the Hedgehog in the Sonic Spinball Pinball Machine.
The pinball machine itself is absolutely stunning to see in person. While the video here captures a lot of It, there's a lot that you just can't see on video. The graphics are beautiful, and even the little line drawings integrated into this pinball machine are wonderful. There are so many extra little touches that go into this unit, you will definitely want to make sure that you stay tuned for our full-blown floor coverage from the event.
I love the fact that, in addition to all the details that went into the side artwork and the artwork on the base of the table itself, It actually had full-motion video and an LCD display that was playing classic Sonic footage as you play the game. This is great for people who are watching along as someone was playing to be able to see, and something that pinball machines have added in recent years that really take the genre to the next level.
In addition to the Sonic Spinball cabinet that you see here, there was also a custom Metroid cabinet that is a work in progress from the same creator. Overall, it just shows the love and dedication that can go into these machines.
We had a chance to speak to the developer and creator himself, there are many hand-drawn pieces in here, 3D printed pieces, and much more. This is definitely one of those things that I would love to see Sega of America license and allow him to produce on a widespread basis because this truly is a work of art.
