For a long time the Yak-9U was once one among the least balanced planes in the game. With a heavy, unwieldy and capricious cannon coupled to an unwieldy frame it was all but outclassed at Tier 7, especially in the small games that predominated over the last year in an environment where large cannons were undervalued and Tier 7 was likely to pull Tier 9 opponents.

In 1.9 though the Yak-9U has some life finally. The larger games that occur now, the uniformly imposed 'balanced' matchmaking and the return of cannon critical damage give it some potential. There's finally some fodder for the Yak-9U to sink its teeth into if you can hang back and choose your opportunities CAREFULLY.

It takes some skill and some foresight, but if you can make that 45mm cannon connect it's completely BRUTAL. But you need to choose your opportunities CAREFULLY and STRICT trigger discipline is needed to put that 45mm cannon on target. But when you can make those hits happen it just wrecks people.

I'd still stop well short of calling the Yak-9U a *good* plane, but it's certainly not as hapless as it used to be and it can be fun now and then when you can make it work. Just think hard and choose carefully...
