Bad Education - Movie Review

In this video, I review the HBO film Bad Education

Bad Education is a 2019 American comedy-drama film directed by Cory Finley with a screenplay by Mike Makowsky based on the New York magazine article The Bad Superintendent by Robert Kolker.[1] It stars Hugh Jackman, Allison Janney, Geraldine Viswanathan, Alex Wolff, Rafael Casal, Stephen Spinella, Annaleigh Ashford and Ray Romano.

It had its world premiere on September 9, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews with critics praising Makowsky's screenplay and especially the performances of Jackman and Janney. It was released on April 25, 2020, by HBO Films.

Based on a true story, the film follows the largest public school embezzlement in American history.

In March 2018, Hugh Jackman was in talks to star in the film, with Cory Finley directing. The screenplay was written by Mike Makowsky, who in 2004 was a middle school student in the Roslyn School District when its superintendent, Frank Tassone, was arrested for first-degree larceny.[3] Makowsky, Fred Berger, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Julia Lebedev, Edward Vaisman and Oren Moverman serve as producers on the film, under their Automatik and Sight Unseen banners, respectively.[4] In June 2018, Allison Janney joined the cast of the film.[5] In July 2018, Geraldine Viswanathan and Ray Romano joined the cast of the film.[6][7] In October 2018, Alex Wolff, Rafael Casal, Stephen Spinella, Annaleigh Ashford, Hari Dhillon, Jimmy Tatro, Jeremy Shamos, Kathrine Narducci, Welker White, Stephanie Kurtzuba, Peter Appel, Ray Abruzzo, Catherine Curtin and Kayli Carter joined the cast of the film.

Principal photography began in October 2018

Michael Abels composed the film score.

It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2019.[13][14] Shortly after, HBO Films acquired distribution rights to the film for $17.5 million.[15] It was released on April 25, 2020.

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 94% based on 79 reviews, and an average rating of 7.55/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Anchored by an outstanding Hugh Jackman, Bad Education finds absurd laughs – and a worthy message – in the aftermath of a real-life scandal."[17] On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating to reviews, the film has a score of 79 out of 100, based on 24 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".
