Cesaro and Seth Rollins compete in a rematch from WrestleMania 37 two months prior, which saw Cesaro soundly defeated Rollins. On the May 7 SmackDown, Cesaro defeated Rollins for a second time to earn a shot against Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania BackLash. However, Cesaro would be ambushed and injured by Rollins after the former lost the match to Reigns. Two weeks later, Cesaro was sidelined due to another injury caused by Rollins, and in the following weeks, Rollins would blame the WWE Universe for what he did to Cesaro. On the June 18 SmackDown, Cesaro would return and assault Rollins. After SmackDown went off the air, it was announced Cesaro and Rollins will have a rubber match at Hell in a Cell.
