The shield pips you are seeing there are armor values. GnaRsTacticalMod have changed armor HP bonuses into Shield Bonuses, which saves units from going into the infirmary if only their armor has taken damage.
Having it as a shield value also removes the possibility of healing it with the medikit, making the game harder.
Armor pips are armor values, but armor does not take damage 100% of the time.
