XCOM: Enemy Within - Episode 72 (Demon Hero)
25th of August, 2015:
The last few days have been trying. We detected something unusually large through the satellite network, clearly extra terrestrial in origin, but big, bigger than we've seen before, and moving quickly. Fearing the same craft we encountered over China, I was hesitant to launch an attack, if it were a Battleship then I was certain, based off the data we recovered while disassembling the last one, that we didn't have remotely enough fire power to bring it down.
Still, I authorised Raven 14's launch, but upon confirming that the ship wasn't an abductor, a large UFO that we have managed to shoot down previously, I recalled the ship. Just in time, it seems, as barely only the critical systems remained operable after the punishment it had taken (I'm told it was quite a harrowing experience trying to land the interceptor upon its return)
There was a heavy, but muted atmosphere in mission control as we watched the UFO drift off our scanners. The first we've lost, though thankfully our pilots weren't lost along with it, but how many civilians might suffer in their place? Still, I stand by my decision, even though I know some disagree with my refusal to launch the other interceptors. Fighting impossible odds isn't heroic, it's merely self-indulgent, and we can't afford to cripple our North American air power by hurling our craft impotently against an indomitable foe... but knowing this doesn't make the our (my) failure feel any less real.
With this in mind, I personally took no small measure of satisfaction away from the following operation against Alien abductors. Our team performed well, and the aliens fell like wheat before the scythe. Though the fight wasn't without some surprises, at one point Revocane took a rather nasty attack head on. I can't help wonder if he might have been taking unnecessary risks due to frustration over escaped UFO. Either way, our on site support, a recent addition to the squad, patched him up on the field, and he'll need only a short rest in medical before being back on his feet.
Now, we're all waiting on Leilith's call to pick her up following her covert assignment to disrupt EXALT's activities. EXALT don't have much time left, I wonder if they know what's coming for them...
