XCOM UFO Defense (also known as UFO: Enemy Unknown) was a groundbreaking 1994 turn-based strategy game developed by Mythos Games and published by MicroProse. Players took command of a secret paramilitary organization tasked with defending Earth from alien invasions. It was widely praised for its tense, strategic gameplay and its innovative blend of action, management and research.
Since its initial release, XCOM UFO Defense has been widely regarded as one of the best strategy games ever made. It was a critical and commercial success and has been credited with popularizing strategy games on the PC. It was also one of the first games to feature randomly generated missions and a persistent world, which helped to set it apart from its contemporaries.
The game was ported to multiple platforms in the following years, including the PlayStation, the Sega Saturn, and the Nintendo 64. It also spawned two sequels, X-COM: Terror From the Deep (1995) and X-COM: Apocalypse (1997).
XCOM UFO Defense also influenced many future games, including the popular X-Com series of strategy games and the 2012 reboot XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Its influence can also be seen in other strategy games such as Sid Meier’s Civilization, Age of Empires, and Total War.
