But that’s far too happy of an ending for this crew, right? The next morning, Beth lights a cigarette as she gets a call from the funeral home. After six episodes, John Dutton has finally come home. Granted, it’s in a casket, but he’s home, nonetheless. He’ll be buried next to his wife Evelyn and the six generations of Duttons that predate him, going all the way back to Elsa.
The day of the funeral is, naturally, not easy. Ahead of the ceremony, Beth pours herself a couple fingers (or a fist) of vodka before driving herself to the funeral site to meet Kayce, Rip, Monica, Tate, Carter, Senator Perry, the cowboys, and Rainwater. When Rainwater asks Beth if it’s ok he attends, she tells him, “You’re my father’s protector now. Whatever that means.” She goes to the barn where John’s body is waiting to be buried and tells him goodbye, telling him she’s done what is best for the land. A hawk appears in the trees above John’s funeral, briefly, before Beth steps up to lay a final flower on John’s casket, she leans down and tells him she’ll avenge him.
Kayce forgives John, laying his rose on the casket. Lynelle tells him she wore the tightest skirt she could find in his honor. Rainwater promises to protect the land for him. And then each cowboy takes their turn, before Rip finally steps up.
