In the platforming renaissance of Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64, Rare was king. Reviving the Donkey Kong family, creating Banjo-Kazooie, burying us in cutesy puns, but their greatest success, Golden Eye 007, would change the gaming landscape. As shooters and MOBAs took over, Rare's blank checks from Nintendo dried up until Microsoft bought Rare in 2002.
Rare released several sequels and spinoffs, but marketing for their new IP, Viva Piñata, was neglected in favor of Xbox shooters like Gears of War. As Microsoft corporate restricted workday music playing and scheduled more performance reviews, office culture soured. Former gaming titans now felt marginalized and the baddies at Microsoft just claimed Rare's appeal had become outdated.
So in 2012, former Rare developers took to Twitter as Mingy Jongo, announcing an independent Banjo Kazooie successor! They disappeared until 2015, but regrouped when Banjo himself, Chris Sutherland and Gavin Price, announced Playtonic Games but for all their combined experience, they needed help. While N64 had only 1 processor, new consoles required these old dogs to learn new tricks. Luckily, young programmers lined up for the chance at platforming nostalgia. Armed with decades of experience, puns for days and some eager new blood, Playtonic is back with Yooka, Laylee, and their friend Trowzer the Snake. Yikes. Have fun!
