According to producer Joel Silver, the Wachowskis pitched The Matrix by showing Ghost in the Shell and simply stating “we wanna do that for real.” They were so inspired by the anime that you might discover that some scenes in the Matrix track shot-for-shot with Ghost in the Shell.
Because creator Masamune Shirow drew inspiration from Arthur Koestler's Ghost in the Machine, Shirow always wanted the title to be Ghost in the Shell, but Young Magazine, his publisher, wanted the flashier title of Kokaku Kidotai, which translates to Mobile Armored Riot Police. Ghost in the Shell was the secondary title, but not for long.
Since the 1995 Ghost in the Shell film was targeted at foreign audiences, director Mamoru Oshii replaced the playfulness and humor in the original manga with computer graphics and a gritty moodiness. The serious, philosophical tone of the films is now the benchmark of the franchise.
Director Rupert Sanders wanted create a film that was visually timeless, so costume designers Kurt and Bart used an unconventional source to help them inform the look of the live-action film: Tumblr. They found that Ghost in the Shell Tumblr pages did an excellent job of curating styles from the different eras of Ghost in the Shell media. Looks like there’s more than weird Rule 34 stuff on Tumblr after all!
WETA boss Richard Taylor said their workshop built robots so they could in turn build more robots in order create the practical effects and make the deadline for the live-action film. The Major’s thermoptic suit is also practical -- it took a full digital scan of Scarlett Johansson, skin-toned silicone material, a single seam in the costume, and two months to achieve the iconic, yet PG-13 friendly, look.
