In the early 21st century, world powers like China, the U.S. and Germany were devastated by Nuclear attack in World War III. Even Tokyo fell into the ocean after a strike, but Japan had developed microscopic machines, called the Japanese Miracle, which removed radiation from the environment.

After a fourth World War that destabilized the geopolitical landscape, Japan emerged as a major world power as it developed a global information network, cyberbrains and cybernetic bodies. Citizens could choose their cyberization: Minimal cyberization plugs them into the network without altering the physical brain, partial cyberization replaces the cerebellar portion with nanotech, and full cyberization replaces up to 97.5 percent of the brain. Fully cyberized citizens could also be transferred between cyber bodies. Cool!

But wait! Cyborgs only get to eat protein bars. Oh, and Cyberbrains also open you up to ghost-hacking. Advanced hackers can alter your memories, affect visual input, or even replace your cyberbrain with their own. That's where Section 9 comes in. Using cyberized agents and A.I. piloted Think Tanks, Section 9 fights cyberterrorism.

But their greatest asset is Major Motoko Kusanagi. Fully cyberized since a childhood accident, Kusanagi uses thermo-optic camouflage and one of the most advanced prosthetic bodies around to fight cyberterrorism, but does a fist-sized lump of brain cells make her human or is she just another kick-ass, naked robot?
