Did you know your nose plays a crucial role in your immune system?

Pew biomedical scholar José Ordovás-Montañés leads cutting-edge research into how the nose’s immune and tissue cells interact to determine how sick we get—and how long it takes to recover. His lab explores the ways different cells within this tissue help initiate and regulate inflammatory immune responses, uncovering the fine line between defense and excessive inflammation. This research could inform new treatments, vaccines, and other strategies to prevent chronic inflammation linked to autoimmune and infectious diseases.

Founded in 1985, the Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences provides funding to promising young investigators working to advance human health. Forty years later, Pew’s biomedical programs now encompass several grantmaking initiatives and have supported more than 1,000 innovative scientists across and medicine.
