For Velagunder, I find that you are better off dodging his projectiles by walking in a horizontal pattern only. You also should have as many herbs as you can to heal yourself if needed. Charge your magic ; don't just spam small shots because their damage is really low (although it's okay to spam a lot of small shots after a charge because Velagunder will close his arms shortly afterwards).

In this video, I'm overlevelled (because I'm trying to get all stats of all monsters, which requires to kill them a lot of times), but I'm still wearing the tier 1 equipment, which probably balances it out.
