The game opens with Adol reminiscing about the events of Ys I and II prior to finding a letter in a bottle basically asking for a hero. Since he fits the bill, he decides to set out on another adventure without telling anyone, but still gets an old man to tag along to take care of miscellaneous paperwork while he spends hours catching up with two characters I don't remember in a bar.

It's at least a fairly easy start to the journey, until Adol's other running gag aside from always getting shipwrecked comes into play.
