Playthrough of Rainbow Arts' 1990 shoot 'em up for the Amiga, Z-Out.

Z-Out, released by Rainbow Arts for the Amiga in 1990, is a horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up that serves as a sequel to their earlier title, X-Out. While retaining the core gameplay of its predecessor, Z-Out introduces a significant addition: two-player cooperative gameplay. This allows two players to team up and tackle the game's challenging levels together, although the game does make some design choices to balance the experience for two players.

The game's narrative involves a threat to Earth from a horde of largely organic alien enemies. Players pilot a heavily armed spacecraft through six levels, each filled with these menacing creatures. While power-ups are present in the game, they play a less central role compared to some other shoot 'em ups. Z-Out places more emphasis on skillful maneuvering and strategic shooting. Notably, in two-player mode, the availability of power-ups is significantly reduced, with most being unavailable and even those that do appear only taking effect from level 3 onwards.

Another key difference between the single-player and two-player modes is the handling of game progression. In single-player, the game uses restart points, allowing players to continue from a specific checkpoint after being defeated. However, in two-player mode, this feature is absent, requiring both players to stay alive to avoid restarting the level. This design choice encourages teamwork and coordination between the two players. Z-Out offers a solid shoot 'em up experience on the Amiga, with its challenging gameplay and focus on cooperative action.
