Zatsuon Ryoiki (Static Noise Area) [PC-98 MIDI SC-55+OPN/FM Towns CD] 雑音領域BGM GS+OPN+タウンズCDサウンドトラック
7I was trying to find games where the MIDI sounds arguably much better than OPN and to that end we have this game. Zatsuon Ryoki was another game released late in the PC-98 era with a horror theme, this game apparently having quite violent scenes inside it with multiple endings (mostly involving the main character dying in various ways). Even though it pushed the horror angle very hard, it is funny that when they released a "renewal" version of it some years later, it was redone with the 'moe' style popular at the time even though it doesn't really match the subject matter (and I could find people posting and complaining about it at the time).
I was planning to upload this several weeks ago but I cannot seem to get the MIDI to render correctly (easier to just buy real Roland SC-55 hardware...), this seems the best that I can get it... Long story short with MIDI playback a small thing being off can make it sound strange, as a drummer it is killing me that I cannot seem to get the hit hat to be grooving but there might be some limitations of software emulation. Anyway even with a stiff sounding hit hat, maybe it adds to the anxiety feeling the overall soundtrack has..
The version I wanted to share here is GS shorthand for their "General Sound" standard that is more modern than MT-32 in that it tried to standardize a SoundCanvas to use between different hardware with SC-55 being the flagship model.
At the end I placed the CD tracks from the FM Towns version, which sounds quite different than both the MIDI and OPN versions, and I added a few OPN songs in the middle for comparison sake (not sure if it is possible to play back with richer OPNA mode but it did not seem so to me). The OPN version is not bad but the MIDI is for sure a fuller sound.
The composer was primarily Ryuichiro Fujisawa (藤沢龍一郎) who seems to have been the lead composer on many D.O. games like Branmarker and others. One blog mentions Hiro Tachibana as well.
