Single-segment speed run of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (French Canadian version) done on March 25 2005 by Philippe 'Wak' Brisson

The game is in French so you might have trouble understanding part of it.

At first I wanted to beat TSA's 1:44:45 pure speed record, but then I decided to do a 100% single segment run with my own strategies. My first attempts were not that great... my first completion was a 3:10 run. I worked on finding parts to improve and lowered my time to around 2:25. While I was working on perfecting my run, a 100% run appeared on SDA with a time of 2:14 but on the GBA version. After watching it I was able to lower my time by around 3 minutes. I continued to work on my run and I accomplished a 2:13 run the same day Alex did his 1:41, and we both improved our dungeons in the same place! I contacted him and we were able to find around 1 minute worth of improvements in the dungeons. I also changed part of my route which overall lowered my time by 6 minutes.

Most of all I would like to thank Alex and Icycool because without them, I would never have been able to improve my run that much.

As always, I fell down once against Moldorm, the boss in the Tower of Hera. I also forgot where I had to go after getting the 4th bottle. I went towards the 3rd dungeon but I had to go to the 6th. Those 2 mistakes together add up to 42 seconds. I also found, after my run was done, a new path which could've saved 15s. But too bad, my luck ran away and I don't think I will ever have that much luck for the random heart pieces.

Random heart pieces: chest game on the first try, digging game on second try. That's the part of the run that makes all the difference, and for once I got lucky.

There are 2 places that I could've used a damage-boost. I didn't do it. Why? Well, not falling against Moldorm in the Tower of Hera is already harder than it looks like, and the random heart pieces usually make me sick and force me to shut down the game during my run because they don't want to cooperate. The damage-boost requires you to have pixel-precision. One pixel too far from the hole and you fall in the hole. One pixel too close and you fall again. I would've thrown my SNES through the window before doing all I stated in the paragraph in the same run.

I thought my run could've been 1:59... but I was mistaken. I don't think it is possible anymore to find 7 minutes worth of improvements. I think that my current route could get 2:05 with lots of luck and perseverance. Getting sub 2 hours on the GBA version is probably possible though.

Finally, I am still playing the game to improve my run, but my luck left me. I think it will take a long time before I beat my time. I won't play this game my whole life! So, if I don't succeed in the next months, I will probably turn off the game for some time... a very long time.
