We've got the stuff, time to crush the bosses. Plus a little extra something at the end with armors that I didn't realize would work that way until now! This game has an impressive amount of The Devs Thought of Everything (...outside of Gold Sword Mothula, anyway).

In normal gameplay, there's really nothing else you can even attempt to downgrade. There's never a weaker sword you can try to get (though if you glitch/cheat enough, you can go straight from fighter's to Tempered and then downgrade to Master at the pedestal, for instance), you can't reach the gloves in the wrong order (though the game will downgrade those similarly if you force the issue), and there's special logic for the boomerangs so that chests will only contain one when you don't have either.

The closest thing you can do legitimately is buy the basic shield if your red shield gets eaten, and that's clearly intentional. The game won't let you buy a weaker shield than you currently have on hand, however, and the Mirror Shield can't be eaten, so once you have it, that's that.

And on that note, I missed a line! If you try to buy a shield that's the same or weaker than the one you're carrying, the shopkeeper tells you: "You don't need that item... Why not select something else?"

Playing Randomizer has emphasized that the vast majority of the game isn't gated by what you've done, but by your inventory. And although the base game places many of the items in a way that railroads you to a certain extent, there's still quite a bit of unusual routing and sequencing you can do, entirely legitimately.

What's more, the devs knew it! An impressive number of frankly nonsensical routing choices result in appropriate modifications to the dialog and narration that you wouldn't normally see.

So, let's try routing the game in just about as unconventional an order as is possible (without outright glitching) and finding out what happens!

(Well... mostly without glitching. There's one particular message in a room that you can't even get to unless something went wrong...)
