79Here is 8-Bit Eric's review of the launch title 1-2-Switch on the Nintendo Switch. 1-2 Switch is a collection of 28 minigames brings with it broad appeal in its variety—1-2 switches activities include shooting cowboys, strumming an air guitar, cradling a baby to sleep, and more-- but offer little in the way of long-lasting fun or replay value.
The assortment of seems to exist to solely to show off the fidelity of the sensors on the Joy-Con controllers, and they do, but unfortunately, these games lack any real depth.
As I mentioned, all the games make use of the Nintendo Switch's innovative hardware in one way or another and require little explanation: . Eating Contest, where you have to chomp your way through as many virtual sandwiches as possible before the time runs out, uses the right Joy-Con's infrared sensor to work out when your mouth opens and closes. The quicker you chomp, the faster you get through the pile of sandwiches. Shave you have to shave your face using the Joy-Con; Table Tennis and Baseball--suffer due to the lack of a visual aid. Hitting a ball between two players is tricky when there's no ball--physical or virtual--to hit.
These games rely on timing and the ability to hear a fastball coming your way, but in a party setting this would be hard to do because parties aren’t usually quiet! Quick Draw, which tests who owns the quicker trigger finger, and Samurai Training, in which one player must correctly predict the swing of and then catch their opponent's sword, are both captivating and hilarious in equal measure. Gorilla is perhaps the weirdest game out of the bunch. it has you pound your chest to a simple beat - in order to turn on a female gorilla… Baby has you take the console out of the dock and hold it like a baby, rocking it slowly until it stops crying, and then setting it down without waking it up.
Eye contact is also key to a number of 1-2-Switch's more suggestive games. But playing any one minigame more than a handful of times with those same people leads to that buzz fading rapidly.
1-2-Switch absolutely should have been bundled with the Nintendo Switch. It's an excellent demonstration of the hardware and the sort of game that could be chucked on when you’ve got friends over and want to show them what the console is all about.
1-2-Switch does a great job of showing off the unique feature set of the Switch and its Joy-Con controllers, but it's seriously lacking in long-term appeal.
