I looked it up and it turns out that Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honour was released a month *before* HoMM3:RoE! That's January 1999 and February 1999 respectively. So the art style was pioneered in both simultaneously, really.

How to set up HoMM3:RoE natively on Linux:

1) Run the installer: https://liflg.org/?catid=6&gameid=86
2) Get updated libraries: http://www.improbability.net/loki/
3) Extract the libraries into a subdirectory called "Loki_Compat".
4) Run the game with some, but not all, libraries enabled:

LD_PRELOAD=Loki_Compat/libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so:Loki_Compat/libsmpeg-0.4.so.0.1.3:Loki_Compat/libsmjpeg-0.2.so.0.0.1:Loki_Compat/libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.0.2.5 ./heroes3.dynamic -w

That makes it run perfectly to this day!

Also, the landing site does not make sense even if she sailed from the east; because that way, she would have to sail to the other side of Enroth. So either she did that, or she sailed to the other side of Antagarich instead... Though also of note is that Antagarich is in the southern hemisphere, so maybe it's not *that* far to sail.
