Ah, Professional Wrestling. Sports entertainment. The naughty stepchild of modern storytelling. Being asked to believe in the Irish whip can take its toll on a first time viewer and for some reason the spook and wonder we accept of horror gets judged harshly when The Undertaker sends a bolt lightning through the perhaps haunted rocking chair of Bayou Swamp Dark Mage and possible shapeshift Bray Wyatt. But you’re telling me Willem Dafoe and Keanu Reeves wouldn’t go to town on a script like that? It’s real to us!

Despite a long history of wrestling being taken less seriously than other forms of theatre it’s cooler than ever now, finding its way into pop cultural consciousness as smoothly as superheroes. And plenty of wrestlers have proven that the in-ring psychology and quick improv necessary for the fight-y gig can provide a great transition into an act-y gig. And no, I’m not just talking the cult classic Ready to Rumble (2000) or comedic shows where wrestlers portray themselves, or even the way Glow (gone too soon, I’ll never forget you) pulled in former wrestlers.

You or someone you know actively looks forward to John Cena’s appearance in F9. Admit it. But way back in the 80s “Rowdy” Roddy Piper’s role in They Live showed us that wrestlers can give iconic performances. Folks like the Miz traipsed from MTV to WWE to the North Pole. And Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is somewhere right now preparing for an unknowable mass of film roles in pre production.
