Mortal Shell is an action-RPG developed by Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack. In here, you will be using a mysterious entity called a “Foundling”, a pale creature who has the power of possessing various corpses or otherwise called “mortal shells”, absorbing their powers, abilities and their memories during the time they are still with the living. With the Foundling, you will then have a difficult journey along the lands of Fallgrim and endeavor to learn its history, discover the fate of its inhabitants, uncover the secrets of your origin, and reveal its deepest mysteries yet to be discovered.

Obtaining metacritic scores of 76 (PC and PS4) and 75 (Xbox One), the game was praised on its clear love letter to the Soulsborne series made by renowned developed FromSoftware. Its strict difficulty is similar, its gameplay, and most of its mechanics are either borrowed or inspired by the great franchise. The Mortal Shell mechanic is also a fresh take in the souls-like series which involves possessing different shells or the “classes” of the game with different strengths and weaknesses. On the downside, issues were found on its various glitches/bugs, performance issues, lack of any build customization in the game and how short the campaign is.

As for me and being a big Soulsborne fan, I really2x enjoyed the game especially its mortal shells mechanic. Even though it lacked the deep RPG customization of the game which are common in soul-like games, I really liked each of the shells introduced in the games, their designs, and uniqueness with each other. However, I also had issues with the gameplay mechanics of the game, including its awkward controls, some bad AI design, some weird balancing issues, and how there are few bosses and locations you can visit in the game. Still though, if you add its weaknesses as to further increase its difficulty, it might not be so bad after all. Regardless of the game’s issues, I really2x had fun playing this game. If you are a souls-like fan, I really recommend you trying this but to be safe, I advise you to lower expectations. Enjoy the walkthrough!!!
