Over 600,000 people go missing in the U.S. yearly, and most of them are never located. Similarly, thousands of unidentified bodies are unearthed annually, with no one knowing what became of them. While some of these disappearances are solved, some remain an everlasting puzzle. These are the ten most mysterious disappearances ever!
10. Jimmy Hoffa
Jimmy Hoffa, a notorious labor leader, disappeared in 1975. His absence sparked off one of the FBI's most protracted ongoing cases in Detroit. Because of the peculiarity of the case, the public was interested in the story, and its storyline influenced many Hollywood films even after decades of disappearance. Hoffa, the ex-convict, was famous for leading the Teamsters union. The union was an umbrella body for warehouse employees, freight drivers, and other U.S. workers.
In 1971, Hoffa's 13-year prison sentence was changed to a federal penitentiary in Pennsylvania, where he served his time for fraud. He was only free for four years before he vanished from a Michigan restaurant after a meeting with Mafia leaders. Many people believed that this union boss was murdered because his position allowed him to have numerous enemies. Although he was officially declared dead in 1982, his body remained hidden to this day. Researchers are not giving up on the prospects of finding his body.

9. Lauren Spierer
After Lauren Spierer's disappearance, students of Indiana University and other campuses in the U.S. were shocked to their bones. Authorities say that the young lady vanished after partying at a downtown bar in Bloomington. She was last seen walking alone outside a classmate's apartment around 4:30 am on June 3, 2011. This event sparked a national manhunt, thereby prompting celebrities like Kim Kardashian to intervene by spreading the news on social media. Eight years later, investigators couldn't locate her stull, and all the tips have led to a dead end.
Among the many obstructions, the investigators faced was the lack of cooperation from the police department. The young men who spent time with her on the night she vanished didn't want to help the case. The team tried to make headway despite the lack of cooperation, but there was no victory in sight. Meanwhile, her parents yearned to see their daughter, whom they think isn't deserving of the treatment she's getting.

8. Etan Patz
Patz was an American boy who was only six when he disappeared on May 25, 1979. The young boy was on his way to the bus stop before he vanished. His teacher noticed his absence in class but didn't report to the principal until later in the day when he didn't come home. The case soon became popular, with everyone airing their opinions on what happened. It generated reactions from the world, with Patz's picture spreading across the city. His photo was printed in milk cartons and pasted on strategic points in town. Despite the massive search efforts, he was never found.
In 1983, president Ronald Reagan declared May 25 every year as National Missing Children's Day. The following year, the National Center for Missing Children was founded by Reve Walsh and John. Patz disappearance and the abduction of Walsh's son was the motivation for establishing the organization. Patz was declared dead in 2001, and in 2017, Pedro was convicted of kidnapping and murdering Patz after a public confession confirmed that he did the act. The FBI raided the alleged crime scene but discovered no new evidence. Pedro was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Amelia Earhart is one woman who has vowed to fly around the world. Historians are still trying to solve the puzzle behind the sudden disappearance of the American pilot. She had already broken records as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean when she and Fred Nooman embarked on the first around-the-world flight in 1937. The duo had set off for a remote island in the Pacific Ocean from New Guinea and set out for the 22,000 miles journey when they ran short of fuel.
