BASS MONTH!!!!

So... what can I say? I had a phase in my life, when I was playing in bands and jamming with the guys all night long. I remember that my friend Robert - bass player showed me this band. My jaw dropped to the floor and is still recovering to this day. We played lots of their songs on rehearsals just for fun... good ol' times. After this brief trip to the memory lane I've got to admit that making this video was really something more for me. I love Primus to this day and I've appreciated them even more after dissecting their songs on the Stylophone. Les Claypool is still my favorite bass player, band leader, video producer and a master showman. Ler is a very underappreciated guitar player, overlooked by almost every "guitar influencer" these days. He is the guy who gives these songs their color and character - sometimes it means more than shredding all over the neck in 250bpm. I think that there is no guitar player these days that can make real textures on the guitar like Ler does. Oh, and I forgot to tell that 95% of their songs feature only a single track by him - that's some skill man! Also the drummers... Herb, Brain and Jay - all of them are masters of their craft. Herb and Brain were my drum idols from my teenage years. Herb for the creativity and control, and Brain for his insane groove machine. This band is a real powerhouse, don't ever judge them by their goofiness.

FAQ
Q: Why only ten?
A: Well, I know their whole discography by heart. I chose the songs that are playable. There lots of songs with ghost notes or some very difficult bass lines that are just unplayable or would sound weird. I wanted to add "Shake Hands With A Beef", "Is It Luck?" or "Lacquer Head" but some parts were unplayable on the Stylophone.

Q: How did you play the tritone on "Jerry Was A Race Car Drier" with a mono-synth?
A: I used the Digitech Whammy for this little trick. The moment where I take the whammy down (with the creaking sound) means that I'm changing the pitch from a tritone to a perfect fourth.

Q: Why is "My Name Is Mud" 3 semitones higher?
A: It's because of the Stylophone's limitations. It was the lowest possible key I could play in.

Q: Why did you cut the takes between some songs?
A: Because I changed the tuning 4 times during this video. If you want to play Les's bass parts you need to think efficiently.

Q: Why didn't you play a whole Primus song, instead you did a "Top 10"?
A: Firstly, I think that Primus has too many good songs. Secondly, because most of their songs have a repeating bass line for 90% of the song and Les talks, not sings. Don't get me wrong, I love this style of music and his talking/singing/shouting but it would be painful, listening to a 5 minute song where the bass plays one bass line (played awkwardly by me) with some dissonant vocals on the Stylophone. That's why I made an instrumental video with their highlights.
