For almost as long as there have been comic books, there have been attempts to recraft, reshape, and recreate their stories into a continuing, cohesive narrative. From “Heroes Reborn” to the “Ultimate Universe” to “Secret Wars”, Marvel Comics has tried repeatedly to take more than a half-century of comic stories, spread out over thousands of issues, and tried to make them make sense.
With the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008’s “Iron Man”, the process should have been a lot simpler, right? A producer like Kevin Feige, with a strong narrative vision, and now with the deep pockets of Disney, the efforts to fit the films of the MCU into a straightforward story should have been a … snap! (Insert Thanos joke here).
Unfortunately, even with all these resources, the MCU has, at times, been anything but a straight-ahead story. While the action has been intense, the characters have been unforgettable, and the stories have been engaging, there have been times when the narrative thread gets lost, and the writers, directors, and actors in the follow-up films have had to pick up those loose threads and weave them into their version of the story.
