10 Times the Clone Wars was NOT For Kids! | Star Wars Explained
Star Wars the Clone Wars is beloved by many as a symbol of Star Wars at its best. The effort put in by George Lucas and Dave Filoni makes the Clone Wars (featuring Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Maul, Darth Sidious, General Grievous, and Count Dooku) arguably beloved by more fans than than anything put out by Disney Lucasfilm under Kathleen Kennedy and Bob Chapek. While I personally love the work of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni such as The Mandalorian Season 1 and the Mandalorian Season 2, to some the Clone Wars is where Star Wars peaked.
The show features surprisingly deep themes, and shows us the depth and gravity of the largest war seen in the Star Wars films. Still, there are many who see the cartoonish animation style and cast of original characters and naively assume that the Clone Wars is a kids show. Heck, I was one of them myself, once. But to those people, I have one question: have you seen the clone wars? And by that, I don’t just mean one episode because, let’s face it, there are some that are purely just for fun. The episode where R2 and 3p0 act out various stories like Gulliver’s Travels is one of them. But no, I mean, have you ever really SAT DOWN and watched the clone wars, because… this show is intense.
The Clone Wars deals with a surprising amount of really deep and heavy themes. And no, I’m not just talking about the violence, but I mean really heavy themes. Like, okay maybe you’d expect it to deal with death and mourning… maybe even the question about what it takes to be virtuous, or how good people do bad things. Or maybe about how bad people can do good, or there can be noble people on the bad side. Maybe you somehow even expected the show to deal with issues such as illicit narcotics, blood sports, the sexual harassment of underage women, and human trafficking
