This is a for fun speedrun that started with the idea that getting into speedrunning is not that difficult. Stardew Valley is a game where the mechanics are discrete, focused on resource management, and is heavily biased by RNG. There is literally no better environment I could think of to bring in one of my friends to try out speedrunning! This is GhostBird's first ever speedrun, and we had a great deal of fun digging into this one. We chose "Mine% 120" as our category to dig into, because it is not too bad in RNG department and has a clear goal in mind; get to the bottom of the mine.

If you are familiar with Stardew Valley, there is a luck based system that you can check by looking at the fortune teller on the TV. Normally rocks have a 2% chance of spawning a ladder when destroyed, which is then weighted based on the number of rocks total on the level as well as further nudged by the "luck" value that day. We sleep until we get good luck, and then run into the mines to try and get through.

The coolest strategy aspect of this run, which we discussed a lot before hand, was how we should tackle resource management. Starting off level 0 in mining means we have to spend a lot more energy every swing of the pickaxe compared to if we were level 10 in mining. The good news is that at day 15, Salmon Berries spawn on the map, which we use to our benefit on top of other foraging food sources to get through. Also, defeating the cave monsters has a native 15% chance of spawning a ladder, on top of the weighted values produced by luck while not costing ANY stamina!

For the run, the most important items are cherry bombs, weapons, and stamina items. We look to suppliment our mid game with salmon berries by spending a few minutes to guarentee we have enough for the end with a no-reset run, and then look to supplement the rest of the food requirements with general foraging. The key weapons are random drops from 20-60, and then a sword we can get at level 90 as a floor reward. If we are stuck with our base weapon, the mid game becomes insanely more difficult.

Lastly, the mid game is probably the hardest portion, because we are low on food and have to rely on RNG to get good weapons as mentioned ealier (which we were fortunate to get in this particular run). The number of swings also increases to destroy a basic rock, which is a really fun challenge to try and figure out how to manage resources during the run. We are also running on current patch for simplicity sake, which loses us a bit of time due to a silly item exchange later in the run.

Overall this is a ton of fun, right now our target time leading up to GDQ submissions is probably sub 1-hour, and we'll see if we hit that. Regardless it was a ton of fun introducing my good friend GhostBird to speedrunning with this game, and I look forward to where we bring down the time!! Hope you enjoy!
