#1168 Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks (PS2) Bosses (13/15): Mileena gameplay
Gameplay of the boss/hidden boss Mileena in Midway/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks.
Mileena’s moves:
• Square: Sai Auto-combo
• Triangle: Sai Launch and Teleport Kick
• Circle: Knock-Back Attack
• R1+Square: [Same as Square]
• R1+Triangle: [Same as Triangle]
• R1+Circle: [Same as Circle]
• Square+Triangle: Sai Projectile
• Triangle+Circle: Rolling Attack
• Circle+Square: Teleport Kick
Well, we’re finally onto the hidden bosses. Because you can’t have an MK game without hidden bosses, I suppose. Funny too, because this time Mileena is the hidden female ninja instead of Jade. Like so many things in this game, go figure.
Mileena is fought initially in a triple boss fight with Jade and Kitana, but there is also a hidden boss fight with her that you can do later in the game. I still have a faint memory of discovering it back in 2005 and it was definitely a little mind-blowing. As is probably to be expected, Shaolin Monks has some ridiculous cryptic (kryptic?) secrets, including the infamous hidden survival mode, as well as the other two hidden bosses we’ll see next. This game is pretty much fanservice incarnate, but it may well be the single best piece of fanservice I’ve ever seen.
Mileena here is…well, honestly not very good. The damage she deals is ridiculously low, her auto-combo only hits twice, and the rest of her attacks are either too delayed, or are really difficult to land consistently. She’s a boss who’s meant to frustrate the player rather than really challenge them as such, and like many MK bosses she works when the CPU is using her, but in human hands you lose the context of the encounter and she comes across as a bit rubbish. It doesn’t help that her attacks after seem to land her in danger after they’re used, or put her in a position where it’s difficult to follow-up with any other attacks. For instance, her rolling attack is probably the only really consistent one she has, but as it usually places her behind the enemy it makes it difficult to then follow it up with another one, despite the fact that the move can innately combo.
Mileena is just too limited to be viable here, but that’s more or less the point really. She’s one third of a trio, and so of course she’s going to feel incomplete when she’s not paired with the other two components that make up her boss fight. She still feeling really authentic here, with her classic moves, design, and everything, but I can’t say I’d really recommend playing as her.
Up next, it’s Cyborg Crocodile Dundee.
