Gameplay of the hidden character Sub-Zero in Midway/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks.

And, finally, we come to Player Sub-Zero. He rocks. His Freeze is brilliant, his Slide is brilliant, his combos are brilliant. Hell, he’s just brilliant in general. Sub-Zero’s design in this game ranks up there as one of my favourite designs of all time, I just adore it. And that’s saying something in a game where I already adore about 95% of the designs. I can’t think of many games as aesthetically pleasing as Shaolin Monks, everything here just looks so…right. I remembered thinking that Sub-Zero looked ridiculously badass when I first played this game, and wished you’d be able to play as him. Well, that wish was of course granted as both he and Scorpion are unlockable for the main game. The only real issue I have with him is that his upgrades aren’t very good, which means 1. That he feels a little stagnant towards the middle of the game, and 2. Only reinforces my point that they could have easily worked the other playable characters into the main game with little effort.

Also, goddamn, I accidentally gave myself a nostalgia rush when I finished the video on Reptile’s bridge. Shaolin Monks was a game I followed from the start, including the original alpha screen shots of Liu Kang and Sub-Zero fighting on Reptile’s bridge. It’s one of those images which I’ve just never forgotten because it was simply that iconic to me, and it was amazing to essentially return to the very moment that first let us know of the game’s existence, and to think of how far both the game itself would come, as well of its fanbase, the hacking/modding fanbase for the game, and the MK series on the whole. A great way to end it, certainly.

And, well, that’s it for Shaolin Monks. An incredibly fascinating, truly brilliant game, and one which I adored being able to show off all the cool little unusable aspects to. I didn’t show off every unplayable in the game; there are about 40 more generic enemies or so. I wouldn’t mind covering them too, but if I do so I’ll probably make those videos for my Requests channel instead.

Next up, a couple "When hacking goes wrong" videos as bonuses, a couple more games to cover, and then, well, that'll pretty much be it .
