Dying is, of course, a major part of what makes video games so fun. It adds a great deal to the challenge, the immersion, the stakes, and the replayability, all at the same time. It is, in fact, such an important aspect of most video games that reputations and criticisms of entire titles are defined by how well they handle (or don’t handle) the concept of death. Games like the Souls series and Fire Emblem series are examples of games that handle player death very well, whereas an example of a game that didn’t do it very well would be 2008’s Prince of Persia.

In some games, though, dying is as much a part of the story as it is the game design. Sometimes, you begin playing a game, only to find out that the protagonist dies at the very beginning, and there’s nothing you can do to change that. Of course, this also serves to let players play as the same character in a sequel without all their upgrades and powers from the previous game, but a lot of the times this also serves to add stakes and tension to the story.

Here, in this list, we’ve compiled what we feel are the thirteen best examples of games where you die right at the beginning, fifteen games we felt actually do it well rather than letting it feel like a cheap, unearned stunt. So take a look, and don’t forget to give us your feedback in the comments section below!
