20 Minutes Till Dawn Gameplay (Luna/Shotgun)
Review:
As someone coming from Enter the Gungeon (which I very much enjoyed), the prospect of another roguelike bullet hell was rather intriguing. I can safely say that the gameplay shown above is merely the tip of the iceberg. With a veritable smorgasbord of hero and weapon combinations, the possibilities of play allow for countless hours with fresh pairings and exciting new synergies.
Coming into the game, I didn't have much in the way of expectations, but I was gladly proven wrong at the sight of enticing roguelite progression and a bunch of stuff to unlock.
The art direction, which nothing too fancy, is pleasing to look at, and a perfect fit for the tonal background the developers were aiming for. Cute characters certainly help as well, though you'll barely have time to be looking closely at their sprites in game.
The music is nice, though not exactly memorable. Sound design is also good, but might feel lacking in punchiness for some.
Graphics are simple, and the art style adheres to a strict color palette so it might put some off if you're looking for the liveliness of an RGB keyboard. That being said, the game has no shortage of its own lively action.
Gameplay, which is the core of a title such as this, is solid, and does the genre justice. Depending on your playstyle, for your first few tries, you might end up with a wildly underpowered build, but as with all rougelikes, experience is the key to improvement. Getting to know abilities and synergies will be the biggest boon to making deep runs, and the combos offered are fun indeed. Even after reaching the last of the upgrade paths, you could do it all again with another character, another weapon, in another run, on a different map. The mix and match style allows for an insane amount of possibilities and keeps each run fresh and exciting.
I'm sure it must be dizzying to ensure that ability combos are (somewhat) balanced, and despite this, It'd be great to see even more abilities added in the long run since in this case, it feels as though a bit more spice couldn't hurt. Regardless, I've got plenty more to play and will assuredly do so.
After what I thought was just a few runs, I realized that two and half hours had passed by in a blink. 20 Minutes certainly offers its own addictive nature as well. And for the price it is on Steam, I can safely say that it's quite worth the money. For the amount of content it offers and game time you'll get out of it, it's a solid purchase.
