As massively clever as it is even after one viewing, 2001: A Space Odyssey is full of hidden details and explanations that elevate it to one of, if not the most well thought out film of all time. Every single thing that Hal does has a logical explanation, and amounts to more than him just malfunctioning. From the very first moment we see the Jupiter Missions vessel, Hal is planning out how he's going to kill the crew if he decides he needs too, and moments later, he decides.

The following points were from other peoples analyses, but we're too compelling for me to not subscribe to:

Hal's "mistake" when notating his winning chess move

The monolith representing a film screen

Dave breaking the water glass representing the barrier between film and audience being shattered

As I expected, this video was blocked before it even went live. Guess I should've addressed my opening word to Warner Bros. as well as MGM. If this video went live, it means they chickened out, and were just trying to mess with me in exchange for raving about their movie. Feel free to email them explaining fair use.

The music in this video is from the 2001: A Space Odyssey soundtrack by Richard Strauss, György Ligeti, and Aram Khachaturian
