I have been alluding to this map from the beginning. De-Moon Side for some reason was originally map E3M5 where it was completely inappropriate in every aspect of progression and theme. E4M9 is much more fitting. It sits there as the ultimate extra challenge. Optional for a casual playthrough, but waiting with an open grin to anyone willing to take it on. As of right now this is my favorite map, but I am biased. I feel a strange connection with it. It speaks to me. Everything about it seems catered specifically to my enjoyment. All of the Gothic, medieval, overly detailed custom textures covering every surface of this architecturally complicated map seem like something I would do if I were a mapper. It feels like I made this map in another timeline. It is poetic to me.
This map is beautiful, but it is also no joke with difficulty. It offers a very unique challenge, where you absolutely have to use berserk to get 100% kills, and to survive in general. The shotgun does not provide the dps needed to carve your way through crowds when you get trapped crossing between the 2 buildings. Only berserk can do that kind of heavy lifting. Not only that, but there is a cage constantly refilling with what seems like an infinite amount of imps. There is actually a total of 80 imps in there, but still you will need all the ammo you can possibly spare for it. I recommend trying to chip away at the crowd whenever you have the opportunity while the other stuff is infighting. The mechanic of the 2 rooms slowly opening up on each trip you make between them is very creative. Having to run back through the ever increasing horde of monsters between the buildings is the perfect challenge to go with it. If you are not a master of berserk, I would say you are pretty screwed here. Thankfully, I think I can call myself a self proclaimed berserk master, since this is my first *unofficial* World Record! I beat Kyle McAwesome's WR time by 37 seconds! I of course did not record a demo because of GzDoom, but I will still happily say that I have the record on one of my favorite maps ever.
The inside of the building is a different beast. It is also intensely detailed, but you now also face ammo constraints as you're finally allowed to use it. That and there are several spots where you could blow yourself up with a close range rocket. There is a chainsaw filling the same space as the mega armor, which I believe is just there to discourage you from using berserk after that point. Pretty dick move but I respect it if that was the point. The final showdown is a very deadly cyberdemon and a theater of barons, in a strange milkshake dinner tile room. I don't know what he was thinking but I love it the same.
From what I've seen, most people HATE this map, which makes me love it even more
This map is set to "Moonrise", one of the best song-map pairings ever. This midi should never be used anywhere else, it is married to this one. It is up beat, mysterious, and even silly, just like the map itself. One of the best soundtracks in the wad.
I love this map to death. I am so happy to have a record on it. I pray that there is a tribute to it in 2022 Odyssey
