The 2015 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 isn't as well-known as some sports cars, but it should be. With its insane supercharged acceleration, the ZL1 is always the center of attention. Here are five reasons why this Camaro earns its stripes.
Preposterous Power
Yes, that's a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 under the hood, which is basically the same one in the Corvette ZR1 and the Cadillac CTS-V. Chevy tunes it to 580 horsepower for Camaro duty, leading to a 0-to-60 sprint of just 3.9 seconds. Keep your foot on the gas, and the quarter-mile whips past in 12 seconds -- now that's fast.
World-Class Dynamics
Chevy's engineers worked long and hard to make the ZL1 a real athlete. It comes standard with Magnetic Ride Control, which smooths out rough pavement for better control at the limit. The Performance Traction Management system helps keep those 580 horses from running wild, and Brembo brakes stop the car on a dime. Still not convinced? The ZL1 lapped the Nürburgring in 7 minutes and 41 seconds, a couple of ticks quicker than a C6 Corvette Z06.
Racy Interior
No special-performance model is complete without a few interior mods, and the ZL1 has some good ones. The available Recaro sport seats hold you tight through fast corners, and the small, flat-bottomed steering wheel gives you a connected feel. The suede dash cover with red stitching is another nice touch.
Cool Technology
Some high-performance cars have features removed to save weight, but the ZL1 has enough hp for two regular Camaros, so Chevy leaves all the high-tech stuff in place. The 7-inch touchscreen with MyLink includes Pandora radio, while a crisp Boston Acoustics stereo cranks the tunes.
Sizzling Style
Like every new Camaro, the ZL1 gets redesigned LED taillights that look great, but the real action is at the sharp end, where a front splitter reduces lift at high speeds and a prominent air scoop in the hood cools that huge engine. The whole package is made complete by beautiful 20-in forged-aluminum wheels.
Autotrader Says
As a coupe or convertible, the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is plain awesome and even starts well under $60,000. Chevy knocked this one out of the park.
