Acura hasn't had a true flagship since the Acura Legend, which made its debut quite a while ago. As a matter of fact, the last time the Legend was on the market, President Bill Clinton was starting his second term -- and Justin Bieber was only 2 years old. But there's a new flagship in town: the 2016 Acura RLX. Here are five reasons to believe that the legend has been reborn.
State-of-the-Art Technology
This Acura's got all you need and then some. There are two central display screens in the dashboard: The top one is for navigation, and the one below is a new touchscreen that controls climate, audio and other functions. Speaking of audio, the standard ELS sound system is one-of-a-kind, and the optional Krell system is concert-quality.
World-Class Seats
It's clear that Acura designers know how to make a comfortable place to sit, because the RLX's front seats might be the best yet. With 12-way power adjustments, and some of the best lumbar support out there, these seats make it easy for you to find the perfect comfort level. The generous backseats, which tout plenty of well-padded space for full-sized adults, are also worthy of praise.
Satisfying Power and Efficiency
With a commanding 310-hp rating, the RLX's standard 3.5-liter V6 makes a pleasant sound when putting the pedal to the metal. If you want true flagship acceleration, though, the RLX Hybrid fits the bill with its 377-hp gas/electric power system that pumps out an impressive 341 lb-feet of torque. This is quite the powerful hybrid. Hold on tight!
Impressive Fuel Economy
It's always nice to save some money at the pump. The RLX's base 3.5-liter V6 returns a satisfactory, class-leading 31 miles per gallon on the highway. As for the Hybrid, it returns mpg numbers in high 20s in the city and low 30s on the highway, which are great figures given all that power under the hood.
Surprisingly Fun-to-Drive
Given that the RLX is on a front-wheel-drive platform, you wouldn't think that it would deliver as well as it does on winding roads. Thanks in part to Acura's new rear-wheel steering system, the RLX handles like a much smaller and lighter car. The RLX can even handle its own on a racetrack, a feat that not all of its rivals can accomplish.
Autotrader Says
Will the 2016 Acura RLX be legendary someday? Only time will tell, but we can say that Acura's latest flagship is definitely off to a great start.
