19The always popular 2016 Toyota Tacoma has received a major overhaul this year. In our latest video, we're taking a closer look at the truck to see exactly what's changed and how we like it.
Although the Tacoma is available from around $24,000 to almost $40,000 depending on trim levels and options, we checked out a TRD 4x4 model priced at around $37,600 with shipping.
The 2016 Tacoma offers two engines: a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder or a 3.5-liter V6. We found the V6 to be plenty powerful and not too painful at the pump. On the road, the Tacoma offers good visibility, responsive steering and powerful braking, giving you a strong feeling of control. And with 9.4 inches of ground clearance and a variety of tech features, you can feel confident off-roading as well. With that said, one thing to note: If you're using your truck as a daily driver, skip the off-road tires. While they look cool, the rough ride isn't worth it.
Inside, the Tacoma is still tough and durable, but the familiar interior now boasts better materials. It also touts some high-end features like dual-zone automatic climate control, heated seats and push-button starting. We also like Toyota's Entune infotainment system, along with the useful Siri Eyes Free feature. And we're happy to see an available blind spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert.
We weren't crazy about the rear seating setup in the access cab, which felt more like extra cargo space than a back seat. If you carry around multiple passengers with frequency, you'll want to upgrade to a crew cab model.
On the road, the 2016 Tacoma doesn't feel dramatically different than the previous model. While it's a little quieter, the power and overall feel won't be a surprise to current Tacoma owners. Off the pavement, the Tacoma is dramatically improved with more capabilities and additional features.
With an all-new look, an updated interior and lots of new features, we think the 2016 Toyota Tacoma is a solid choice whether it's your work truck, your daily driver or your weekend toy.
