The BMW M4 has a new competitor to contend with: The 2016 Lexus RC F makes a serious run for the German sports car's money. And to us, the race is looking pretty tight.
The RC F is a luxury performance coupe that offers distinctive styling and race-car qualities, including a pretty thrilling non-turbo V8 engine. Here are five reasons why we think the RC F has world-class appeal.
Sizzling V8
Lexus uses the old IS F super sedan's engine in the RC F, but they've added 51 horsepower for a strong total of 467 hp coming from a 5.0-liter V8. It's an amazing engine that offers split-second responses. And while it's typical to find turbocharged power plants in this segment, Lexus decided to go with a good old-fashioned V8. But don't worry, putting your foot down on the gas instantly makes you forget about missing a turbo engine. The RC F is a pleaser on the street.
Singular Styling
If you haven't seen the Lexus spindle grille, check it out now: This front end could appear in a dictionary beside the entry for "cool." The rear end boasts angled quad exhaust pipes, which bring some attitude to the car's look and feel. Make no mistake: The RC F is front-stage showroom-ready.
Sleek Cabin
A lot of cars dish up unique exterior styling while their interiors are mediocre at best. Not so with the RC F. We'd actually go so far as to say that we like the inside better than the outside. The front seats offer exceptional support, and the angled dash creates a cockpit feel. The technology is there as well -- the Lexus Remote Touch interface works well and has a user-friendly touchpad controller. Rear-seat room is little tight, so we recommend using that space for cargo.
Track-Tested Handling
The RC F is track-ready and has been tested extensively on Germany's famed Nuerburgring raceway. The coupe boasts 19-inch tires and a sport suspension that can handle turns at high speeds. It isn't just a track car, however. With plenty of comfort for everyday drives, the RC F is a true dual-purpose performance machine.
Lexus Reliability
There's no question that Lexus is a reliability leader. For all the greatness of German performance cars, they can be a little finicky. Compared to its Teutonic counterparts, you may find the RC F gives you more time having fun on roads and less time in the shop. And unlike other rivals, Lexus models offer excellent resale value.
Autotrader Says:
Before considering top European brands, check out the 2016 Lexus RC F. This 467-hp performance coupe offers no apologies and delivers in every category. BMW, you've been warned: The RC F is catching up.
