The 2016 Chevrolet Trax is ready-made for the realities of today's driving culture. Cities are growing quickly, and more and more, shoppers are finding smaller vehicles to be the strongest option. But the thing that many miss most when they switch to a compact ride is that high driving position they got used to in their SUV days.
Well, the Trax delivers the best of both worlds. By keeping the driver elevated while still maintaining small-scale dimensions, the Trax makes itself a formidable contender among competitors. Here are five reasons to check out Chevy's latest compact crossover.
Maximum Maneuverability
If you do a lot of parallel parking on busy streets or in tight spots, you'll want to have a good look at the Trax. It's only 8 inches longer than the subcompact hatchback it's based on, the Chevy Sonic. We like to refer to the Trax as a Sonic on stilts. The combination of manageable dimensions and a bird's-eye view from the driver's seat make this a great on-the-go city car.
Refined Highway Ride
This segment generally isn't known for a good highway drive, but the Trax breaks that mold. At highway speeds, the crossover handles its own thanks to a nice suspension and great sound insulation for a quieter ride. The steering inspires confidence, and the Trax has no problem passing larger vehicles like 18-wheelers. When you're in the Trax, it doesn't feel small at all, and that makes a difference on the road.
Fuel-Efficient Engine
Chevy gave the Trax one powertrain, a fuel-efficient Ecotec 1.4-liter turbo 4-cylinder. Front-wheel-drive models return 26 miles gallon in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, which are impressive figures. With available all-wheel drive, highway fuel economy drops slightly to 31 mpg. But no matter the trim level, the Trax will save you money at the pump.
Flexible Storage
Sure, the space is small, but its efficient design leaves room for cargo. The Trax has almost 50 cu ft. of space with the rear seatbacks folded flat. You can even fold the front seat flat as well, so you should have no problem hauling surfboards or other long items. It may be a Sonic on stilts, but the Trax is much more versatile than its subcompact cousin.
Generous Features
All trim levels are well-outfitted. Standard features include a 7-inch touchscreen with USB connectivity and a 4G Wi-Fi hot spot. The LTZ trim has a Bose audio system and leatherette upholstery, but we think the base-level LS trim is pretty well-loaded with features, too. Overall, the Trax offers considerable bang for your buck.
Autotrader Says:
It isn't an SUV in the traditional sense, and it won't go off-road, but the 2016 Chevrolet Trax is made for real-world driving. Take this small Chevy for a spin; you may find it fits just right.
