250American carmakers needed a wake-up call, and they finally got one in the 2016 Lincoln MKC. For some time now, European and Japanese brands have dominated in the market for compact luxury crossovers. The MKC is changing that, though, giving those of us in the States something to root for. With great technology and a powerful engine, the MKC is ready to compete in this elite field. Here are our five reasons why the Lincoln MKC will be a home-crowd favorite.
Lovely Looks
Lincolns typically have a good-sized grille up front, and the MKC doesn't break tradition. However, the MKC's grille is a bit more subtle, and the Lincoln logo goes well in the center of the dual-wing design. At side profile, it has a strong, athletic look and clean finishing. The distinctive styling compliments everything else very well. Job well done to the Lincoln design team.
Adept Handling
The MKC has some relation to the Ford Escape, which is a good thing. Behind the wheel, the Escape is one of the most nimble compact crossovers you'll find, and the agile MKC takes on that same characteristics of its less-expensive family member.
Both vehicles have Ford Focus roots, and that's where the MKC receives its sporty, responsive handling. We like the available continuously controlled dampers, which let you change from comfort to sport mode at the touch of a button.
Appealing Technology
Lincoln has outfitted every MKC with a standard 8-inch touchscreen and the SYNC3 interface, which has some serious smarts. You can also opt for adaptive cruise control and a fancy self-parking system. The long list of tech just continues, including a Lincoln smartphone app and a solid 14-speaker audio system.
Two Turbocharged Engines
In the performance department, the MKC comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder derived from the Escape. Delivering 240 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, it has more than enough muscle for most situations. Equipped with standard front-wheel drive, you should see about 29 miles per gallon on the highway, too.
However, if you want more juice, you'll have to try the optional 2.3-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine (shared with the amazing Ford Mustang), which is rated at 285 hp. The 2.3-liter engine also comes with standard all-wheel drive (it's optional on the 2.0), and you can instantly feel the difference when you put the pedal to the metal.
Versatile Interior
With both the rear seatbacks folded flat, the MKC has 53.1 cu ft. of cargo space, more than enough for a run to the home improvement store. With the Reserve package, you get a power lift gate with a foot sensor. Generally, luxury crossovers don't get down and dirty, but the MKC is ready for dirty work if need be.
