30If you'd love to own a European luxury sedan, but your budget's holding you back, you definitely need to check out the 2016 Volkswagen Passat. The new Passat's received a substantial update, although the look remains essentially the same.
If you're more interested in features, comfort and safety over aggressive exterior styling, than the Passat can be for you. Available in several trim levels, our test car was the upscale SEL model with the optional lighting package.
As for power, the Passat is motivated by a standard turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that's surprisingly quick and delivers impressive gas mileage, too. Or, you can opt for the V6, but the 4-cylinder is plenty powerful for most drivers.
On the road, the Passat handles and corners with confidence and has a bit of a sporty feel. On the highway, it really shines. It's ideal if you have a long commute or do a lot of road trips with the family.
The interior is understated with an upscale vibe. You and your crew will enjoy the heated front and rear seats, and the enormous trunk with hands-free opening fits plenty of luggage. However, we wish there was more storage up front in the center console. On the upside, the back seat is spacious, with plenty of room for car seats.
The Passat's tech is much improved, overall. Now, it's iPhone and Android compatible. We're especially big fans of the Apple CarPlay feature.
The car's onboard voice-recognition feature is excellent. You won't find yourself arguing with it on a daily basis to call Mom rather than Bob. However, we'd prefer the touchscreen to be larger and located higher on the center stack.
As for safety, even the base level Passat can be equipped with some impressive technologies, like lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning.
Essentially, the 2016 Volkswagen Passat is a feature-rich midsize sedan with a lot going for it. You'll receive tons of high-end safety features and a bit of German engineering you might not otherwise be able to afford. For shoppers on a budget, that can go a long way.
