131Jaguar may be a little late to the crossover party, but the luxury automaker's first SUV was probably worth the wait. The all-new 2017 Jaguar F-PACE offers sleek styling, a spacious interior and a variety of comfort and convenience features.
The F-PACE comes in five well-equipped trim levels, all of which feature all-wheel drive. Our test car was a 35T Prestige with the optional Vision, Technology and Comfort Plus convenience packages.
The F-PACE offers a choice of three different engines. There's a fuel-efficient 4-cylinder diesel expected to get around 40 miles per gallon on the highway. But our preference is for the two variants of the more powerful 3.0-liter V6, including a supercharged version. All engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Behind the wheel, the F-PACE has great visibility and feels very planted to the road, not tall and clumsy like some SUVs. Jaguar's crossover corners well and handles itself like a luxury sedan with some sports-car precision thrown in for good measure -- which is even more reason for the automaker to offer the supercharged V6.
However, we don't like the auto stop/start feature, which can be turned off but always resets itself to "on" each time you shut off the car.
While there are some less-than-luxurious details, such as hard plastics on the doors, there are plenty of available features that will win over the entire family. For instance, the 3G mobile hot spot is a luxury you'll grow to love if you have kids with lots of devices.
The F-PACE's elevated stance allows little ones to get in and out with ease, and the gesture-controlled power lift gate -- which you operate by presenting your foot under one of the rear flanks of the vehicle -- comes in handy all the time. Visually, we think opting for larger wheels and tires gives the F-PACE a more premium look and better matches its personality.
Thanks to multizone climate control and reclining heated rear seats, all passengers can customize their own version of comfort. Meanwhile, the panoramic roof helps to make the cabin feel more spacious, and seats that fold flat in a variety of configurations bring versatility to the roomy cargo area.
With a luxury SUV, you can expect a fairly advanced multimedia system, but some users have found Jaguar's InControl Touch infotainment system a little quirky. Once you get used to it, however, the interface is attractive and fast. The upgraded InControl Touch Pro has a larger screen and received more positive feedback from drivers. Meanwhile, Jaguar's new Activity Key is an innovation ideal for those with an on-the-go lifestyle. This piece of wearable tech is perfect for drivers who don't like to carry their keys: Simply touch the Activity Key to the back of the car, and the key fob left inside the car is deactivated.
And for those with advanced safety features high on their wish lists, the F-PACE does not disappoint. But be prepared to upgrade to a higher trim level to access some of the more sophisticated innovations.
With its sleek styling, excellent handling and overall versatility, we think the 2017 Jaguar F-PACE is sure to become a popular choice for those seeking a fun-to-drive luxury crossover.
