Since the redesign of its flagship XC90 for 2016, Volvo’s cars have had a less boxy, more rounded shape that’s classy without looking aggressive. The new XC40 will be the smallest and least expensive Volvo SUV so far with that new look, fitting into the increasingly crowded subcompact crossover segment. Offering Volvo’s Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system with adaptive cruise control, as well as Road Sign Information, the XC40 will make lots of driver-assistance and safety tech available at a relatively low price.
All XC40s use a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that produces 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Current versions have all-wheel drive, but a front-wheel-drive version might arrive this summer. All versions use an 8-speed automatic transmission our reviewer found confusing, but he did enjoy driving the XC40, particularly in Dynamic mode. He also praised the XC40’s room and cargo space, finding the backseats roomy and cargo space abundant. Read more on CarGurus: https://cargur.us/nb3Hg
