2020 MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS GP SPIED TESTING AT THE NÜRBURGRING
798During the Industry Pool at the Nürburgring I have filmed the 2020 MINI John Cooper Works GP.
As we've seen from a handful of teaser images and spy photos of early test mules, Mini is working on the most hardcore road car it has ever produced. It will be called the Mini John Cooper Works GP, a name that has previously been reserved for the company's most powerful and lightweight models. Camouflaged prototypes have given us a good indication of what the car will look like but this latest spotting wears very minimal disguise, giving us our best look yet at the car in all its hardcore hot hatch glory. Just look at those insane wheel arches.
In addition to the unique wheel arches, the GP will be equipped with larger wheels to fill those massive flares, an enormous rear spoiler, a deeper front spoiler, larger brakes, and a rear-seat delete.
Only 3,000 units are planned with a turbocharged four-cylinder rumored to put out around 300 horsepower. This would likely be the same engine found in the BMW X2 M35i, which produces 302 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque going out through an eight-speed automatic.
Since the X2 and the Mini Cooper ride on the same platform, we wouldn't be surprised if they also shared a drivetrain. What remains to be seen is whether the Mini will come with front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive and if it will be available with a manual transmission. In the US, the X2 is only available with xDrive and an automatic but offering a manual has always been a staple of the Mini brand. The John Cooper Works GP is expected to debut later in 2019 with deliveries beginning sometime in 2020.
