The BMW Group recently debuted its latest creation, the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, at the Frieze Los Angeles art fair. This unique vehicle pays homage to South African artist Esther Mahlangu, blending her distinctive Ndebele art with cutting-edge technology. The car features color-changing capabilities achieved through electronically-animated film developed in collaboration with E Ink. This film, applied in strips across the car's body, allows for shimmering, dynamic patterns reminiscent of Mahlangu's artwork.
Named after Mahlangu's first son, the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA showcases 1,349 laser-cut sections of film, each individually controlled to accurately reproduce the intricate details of the artist's designs. This technology represents a significant advancement, building upon previous innovations in BMW's color-changing capabilities.
In addition to its visual impact, the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA offers an experiential dimension with a specially curated soundscape by Renzo Vitale, BMW Group's Creative Director of Sound. This soundscape incorporates elements of South African Ndebele culture, including samples of Mahlangu's voice and the sound of the feather brushes she used in her paintings, blending heritage with contemporary technology.
The development of this color-changing technology has progressed rapidly, with the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA representing the latest evolution. From the ability to switch between white and black in the BMW iX Flow to displaying thirty-two colors in the BMW i Vision Dee, advancements have continued to enhance the complexity and durability of the technology.
While the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA remains a one-of-a-kind creation inspired by Esther Mahlangu's artistry, its development signifies a promising future for potential series production incorporating this innovative technology.
