2024 F1 AUSTRALIAN GP Qualifying by Peter Windsor
Max Verstappen's astonishing skill was on full display in Melbourne on Saturday when he extracted the maximum from his Red Bull RB20-Honda in the dying moments of qualifying. To the backdrop of ultra-sticky, soft-compound Pirellis that required both management and finesse, Max uniquely broke the 1min 16sec barrier on his final run. A Ferrari SF-24 joins Max on the front row - but it won't be the Charles Leclerc car; on the contrary, it was Carlos Sainz who superbly qualified second, ahead of Red Bull's Sergio Perez, the McLaren-Mercedes of Lando Norris and Leclerc. For Mercedes and Aston Martin-Mercedes, qualifying was disappointing: Mercedes will start P7/P11 (George Russell/Lewis Hamilton) and Aston P9/P10 (Lance Stroll/Fernando Alonso). Note: after this video was posted, Sergio Perez received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Nico Hulkenberg.
Peter Windsor analyses the day's proceedings.
