A classic type of fault with USB data sticks; plugged in to a laptop or PC and someone knocks the stick or drops the laptop, resulting in the destruction of the connections and no more access to the data.

Fortunately this kind of failure is the easiest of all the possible USB physical failures to fix with discrete part build units ( for monolith USB sticks things are a lot harder ).
