#262 Real Bout Fatal Fury PS2 \\ Yamazaki, Kim, and Duck King--but they ruined Hon-Fu!
Playing around with some of the new or weren't-in-the-last-one characters in Real Bout Fatal Fury, the quick follow-up to the superlative Fatal Fury 3--Real Bout recycles the character sprites and most of the character artwork, sound effects, and so forth.
This is the RBFF in Garou Densetsu Battle Archives 2 (Fatal Fury Battle Archives Volume 2 in the States) on PS2, and I'm playing with the Arranged soundtrack (AST--the fully orchestrated music from the NEOGEO CD version of the game) pumping!

Real Bout simplifies the control for the "line sway" system and makes it easier to neutralize, which is a plus; also time-limited power meters and more supers (FF3 just has one per character, usable when your life is flashing or something), which to my mind is not such a plus. ; )
The main downer though after the mind-blowing stages of FF3 is that in RB you only get one stage for every three matches. The stages do have this element of interactivity with the breakable stage sides and subsequent ring outs, but those can also feel like a significant distraction. Well, it's something different, I suppose.
Oh and the controls are different, instead of the old light/heavy punch/kick, now it's punch, kick, power attack. Less keen on that. The inputs for special moves are much more forgiving here, but you have to rely on them more, as it doesn't have quite as strong natural chain combos and so forth like its predecessor. It's using the same animations and sounds so the hits still feel really strong--Yamazaki, Duck King and Kim, who make their first playable appearances in this system, along with those darn wizard kids ; P, feel really good; even Billy is all right, I guess : p--but it isn't *quite* as organic, intuitive, and satisfying to me as FF3's combat--minus that darn line system, whose double-button controls escape me entirely in FF3 ; P. But I loved playing every character in 3, whereas here there are now characters I'm not so keen on--and they turned Hon-Fu into a terrible mockery.
There's also very little story here; you don't get individual conversation bits before and after fights, for instance. And the difficulty curve feels a bit odd, like it doesn't change much until you get to the third area, fight seven; and maybe it's just me, but Sokaku seems super-strong no matter what match I face him in. : o
Still, Real Bout is a very playable game and has an element of compulsive power to it for me, I find I keep poking away at it after I'd thought I was going to stop.
