Will VR Reinvent the Arcade?
On Monday I interviewed Dan Hascall (who also works for Intel as business manager), the founder of ‘The VR Cafe’ a location in the Washington Square Mall in Tigard, Oregon. Not only did he have five powerful HTC/Vive VR systems in 10’ x 10’ spaces, two were the newer Vive Pros with V2 lighthouses and controllers. He also had commercial licenses of most of the popular VR titles, including a number multi-player versions. But that wasn’t all they had to offer. Lots of comfortable sofas and cafe style seating area with bar stools, full NA beverage bar, with snacks all from local vendors making it not a location for the sole VR enthusiast, but parties, Meetups and even professional use with a client.
So this got me thinking, is this just a novelty or will this actually allow VR to grow just like Arcades helped the home video gaming market flourish with the latest in video gaming technology, or like video game arcades, fade away? Dan doesn’t think so, and he is already seeing an increase in business from birthday parties, office Meetups and in the future one large space for professionals to use for full size VR mockups and floor plans and the ability to bring in custom VR apps via the web or a portable drive. Don’t forget amusement park experiences like ‘The Void’ and even a complete VR amusement park in China, so in my mind I do see these popping up around the world, which would make Dan smile a little bit, especially if they have the name ‘The VR Cafe’ attached to them.
19:20 - 3D Updates from the past:
August 1st is just around the corner and that the Trump administration will allow ANYONE to upload & download plans, CAD files and instructions on how to use low cost 3D printers and CNC machines from the US, EU and China making it not only difficult to know who has a lethal, military automatic weapon, but the equipment used to make them. Add to this that some 3D print service bureaus take Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies will make it next to impossible who is making what for who.
