This 3D printed and walnut plywood lamp is one of our favorite projects. We definitely want to do more projects combining 3D prints and woodworking. Doing a 3D printed frame really allowed us to get a sturdy base in that angled, faceted shape, which would have been a lot trickier to do using wood alone. Plus we love the modern / retro design, and we love that it's a large, substantial lamp. This was our first DIY lighting project and wiring the lamp using the lamp kit was very easy. Now we are brainstorming even more DIY lighting ideas! It would be fun to try something larger, like a standing floor lamp.
A few specific notes: the copper tape we worked with looks really nice, and we think it could be used in a lot of DIY projects. It's real copper and very shiny. One tricky part of this project that we didn't get into much in the video was sanding down the walnut plywood to size. Because it sanded so easily, it was really easy to accidentally go too far. Luckily we had a big sheet of plywood and the panels were pretty small, but be careful and pay attention when sanding because you want a snug fit. Same goes with the chamfer we added to the bottom panel pieces. For finishing, we used wood oil because it's so simple and we wanted a finish that was matte, but you could really finish them however you want. A shinier wood lamp could look really cool too with the light reflecting off of it!
