The mystery of only hearing a voice can build suspense and also have you assume things that may or may not be true. Your imagination can be much more powerful than anything your eyes can see. The radio is always around us with disembodied voices speaking, but we never are afraid of them until something comes out that we didn’t want to hear.

1.) P.T. the voices
a. Starting off, the radio is simply playing news reports on the murders of families by hands of the father. Slowly, the radio tells us more with the voices of the victims, and maybe even the father. Even sometimes giving commands that you should never obey. “I can hear them calling me from hell”. An added bonus is the voice in the bag.

2.) Portal 1, Galdos before the reveal: Something not quite right about her.
a. GlaDos is largely known to be much more than just a voice. However the first experience with her as a player is unnerving. There is something just not quite right about this automated voice that leaves a hint of suspicion in the player’s mind.
3.) Only If, the psychopath on the other side.
a. The mysterious man on the radio who orders you to do insane and sometimes even unbelievable tasks is annoying to most. However, many people assume sociopaths are sophisticated wine drinkers, when in reality they are often crass and under educated. He strikes me as the type of man who would do unspeakable things to you and find it no more unusual than taking out the trash.
4.) The walking dead season 1, the man on clementine’s walkie talkie.
a. To Lee, Clementine is his whole world. When he hears a mysterious male voice come out of her radio, that he assumed was broken, he can only fear the worst. The implications and of an anonymous adult stranger talking to your pseudo daughter strikes a cord in a much more realistic fear that many parents feel every day. Which is what makes this voice much scarier to some.
